posted by Emily Yaddof on Thursday, May 26, 2016

The season of sun-kissed days and bon fire nights is finally here! These warm days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are made for outdoor concerts, movies under the stars, dinners on the patio and great fesitvals in downtown Cedar Falls. Want to make your summer truly epic? Add these five must-experience events to your summer bucket!

Movies under the Moon

This is the iconic event of the summer in downtown Cedar Falls. There are six opportunities for you to pull up a chair or cuddle under a blanket beneath the starry sky to join us for a free outdoor movie at Overman Park. Live music from the Cedar Valley Acoustic Guitar Association begins at 6:30pm followed by the movie at dusk. Food vendors will also be on hand, or you can pack your own picnic! Just remember, no glass bottles at the park. This year’s dates and movies are as follows:

June 3 – Big Hero 6
June 17 – Ice Age
July 8 – We Bought a Zoo
July 22 – Bolt
August 5 – Alvin and the Chipmunks
August 19 – Rio

Farmers markets are another staple event of the summer. Peruse local goods, fresh produce, unique art and more every Saturday morning from 8:30am-noon, May-October, at the Cedar Falls Farmers Market at Overman Park.

Every community has a signature summer festival, and for Cedar Falls, it’s Sturgis Falls on June 24-26. Named after William Sturgis, who originally founded the community of Sturgis Falls in 1845 (later renamed Cedar Falls in 1848), Sturgis Falls is held annually the last full weekend in June. Visitors can meander throughout four parks to enjoy a variety of live music, entertainment, carnival rides, food vendors, a parade, a talent competition, a classic car show and more, all for free admission!

FondoFest Street Festival

Last summer’s hottest new event, FondoFest, is returning again this year on an even grander scale! We’re once again shutting down Main Street and setting up a stage with live music, a beer garden featuring SingleSpeed brews, and a kid’s FUNdo area featuring a Strider Bike obstacle course, balloon animals, face painting and inflatables. Local eats will be available on the street from downtown restaurants as well. This year, we’re also adding a CrossFit competition and extending the live music! Bike riders, don’t forget to register for the Gran Fondo Cedar Valley prior to the festival. The ride starts at 7am and we’ll have cold brews on tap for you to enjoy when you return from your 60 mile or 100 mile course. Ride registration is now available here.

Cedar Valley Acoustic Guitar Association Concert

There is no better venue for music than an open air stage at the park. Cedar Falls has a variety of music events this summer, so whether you enjoy the smooth notes of classic jazz or prefer to dance your heart out to your favorite rock jam, you’re sure to find the perfect music event right here in downtown Cedar Falls.

Live to 9 – June 3, 10, 17, July 15, 29, & August 12
Cedar Falls Municipal Band Concerts – Every Tuesday at 7:30pm, June-July
Cedar Basin Jazz Fest – June 24-26
Cedar Falls Municipal Band Ensembles – Every Tuesday at 7pm in August
Some Enchanted Evening – August 25-28

So there you have it! Don’t let your summer bucket list go unchecked. Get out there and eat, shop and live local in downtown Cedar Falls!
